Boscia albitrunca - Witgat , Shepherd's tree
 

The Shepherd's tree is an evergreen tree withsmooth grey stem.
Grows up to 7 metres tall in dry woodland. Found from Zambia in the north to the northern Cape province in the south.
Flowers from August to November and fruits from November to April.

This tree is highly prized by browsers such as
Giraffe, Kudu, Eland, Nyala, Steenbok, and Impala. The fruits are eaten by Bulbuls, Barbets , Hornbills, Doves, Parrots, and Starlings

A decoction of the roots is used to treat haemorrhoids and dried, cut up, roasted, the roots make a substitute for coffee. Young flower buds can be a substitute for capers.
