Identification
The Red Duiker has a distinct deep chestnut-red colour. It has a tuft of long darker hair between the horns. Both sexes have horns.
Habitat
It is confined to thickets and forests with well-developed undergrowth. It is dependent on water. The Red Duiker is limited to dense mountainous forest, riverine forest, wooded ravines and coastal forest with water.
Habits
It is a solitary animal, although pairs or a female with her young are also seen. It is very timid and is seldom seen except on cool, cloudy days. It takes flight to denser areas at the slightest sign of danger. It likes to forage beneath trees where Samango Monkeys have dropped fruit. It uses common dung heaps and may be territorial.
Food
It feeds on fresh as well as dry leaves, small branches and wild fruit. It drinks water regularly.
Vocalisation
A load "chee-chee" sound (loader than that of a Suni) and a whistling screaming sound.
Breeding
A single young is born anytime during the year. Ewes have two pair of groin mammae.
