The Nyala is an elegant, slender antelope. The male has a white chevron mark between the eyes, white-tipped mane and yellow socks. Only the male has horns. The female is lighter in colour and much smaller. |
| Habitat | |
| The Nyala is associated with thickets in dry woodland. This includes dense woodland, riverine forests, island bush in floodplains and other thickets. Surrounding floodplains and grass plains are visited when grass sprouts. It is dependent on water. | |
| Habits | |
| It forms temporary herds of 3 to 30 animals with home ranges overlapping. Solitary young ones, females and males, young male herds, adult male herds, female herds, family herds and mixed herds can be distinguished. Family herds are the most stable of all. The male horns the ground or lifts its mane when another male is nearby. It grazes when it is cool, even at night, and rests during the hottest part of the day. | |
| Food | |
| It eats leaves, branches, fruit and flowers. It drinks water daily when available. | |
| Vocalisation | |
| The female makes a "click" sound and young ones bleat. A deep bark as an alarm call. | |
| Breeding | |
| A single young is born anytime during the year peaking in August to December, after a gestation period of ± 7 months. Ewes have two pairs of groin mammae. | |
